Mums and dads who are very much involved in the development of creativity, critical thinking and life skills among their kids would be making a very wise decision when they encourage their children to study drama. Why choose drama?
Just like any other sport or skill, learning drama will help the kids to be inspired in realising their most cherished dreams in life and the vicarious learning that they get from stage-plays, skits and for acting on a literary genre will give them the strength to face the challenges of life and the determination to achieve their ambitions. Attending formal schooling is the first step in the child’s quest for knowledge that will help them shape their destiny, but sending them to extracurricular activities such as performing arts is an ‘out-of-the-box’ learning activity that will serve as their learning tool in achieving his dreams.
Studying drama will surely help develop a child’s linguistic, bodily-kinesthetic, interpersonal and intrapersonal intelligences. Eventually, with more drama trainings, some manifestations of other intelligences may be evident, depending on the drama activities that the child participated in.
When properly guided by parents, kids are able to welcome new opportunities to learn and they also take pride in themselves when their goals take a step-by-step fulfillment. Their love for drama may also lead to the discovery of a related inclination—like script-writing, costume or set designing, choreography, or even directing. Indeed, a lot of amazing skills and abilities may potentially be brought about by engaging in drama!
Consider the following potentials which may be honed when a child is into the performance of real-life situations:
The child’s playful imagination is manifested when he assumes the real-life role in a play, dramatizing a situation which he has actually experienced. Creativity and flexibility are practiced as he / she gets the opportunity to play different characters.
The little ones get the opportunity to recognize the society and the world that they are in. They are able to act on scenes; way before they experience them in real life. Thus, they learn prudence and good sense and become aware on how to best deal with the same scenarios once they encounter a similar circumstance in real life. They become clever and bright—not through formal learning or studying within the confines of the classroom, but they become smart kids through performing arts!
The child’s vocabulary is widened and their communication skills
are improved as they get to deliver lines – complete with body language and facial expressions that go with the script. Interpersonal relationships are practiced as instructions and portrayals are discussed. The child learns to observe cooperation, punctuality, patience, and realise the need to attend to the workshop. It’s definitely a perfect way to establish ‘professionalism’ at an early age!
The ability to be sensitive to the needs of co-participants is learned. As dialogues and movements are expressed, and coaching, criticisms and suggestions are given, the child learns to respond with ease and graciousness. The various theatrical experiences also teach them how to be resilient in facing different life situations and to understand and show respect to people from all walks of life.
The child learns to work with others, but is also able to spend time by himself when asked to memorize the lines for the character they are playing. This establishes a sense of independence and self-reliance in the child.
Without a doubt, as we inspire our children to study drama, we also give them the above-mentioned benefits—the gifts that will serve as powerful tools which will help them attain a holistic education in their pursuit of the Big Dream !
